Humans live longer than most animals! However, there are still a few exceptions, and turtles are one of them. Believe it or not, these reptiles can reach 100 years of age. So today we introduce one who is almost two centuries old!
Meet Jonathan, a 187-year-old giant tortoise that is currently the oldest land animal in the world. Jonathan, who now lives on the Island of Saint Helena, Seychelles, and resides with the governor at Plantation House, was born in 1832.
The most interesting fact about this reptile is that it was even captured on camera over a century ago. The first picture of Jonathan was taken in 1886. So it’s really impressive how age has passed without affecting his appearance. Needless to say, turtle was about 54 years old when this photo was taken.
Jonathan is still full of energy and active as a young player. However, despite all this, doctors notice signs of aging. According to them, his sight and smell are weakening. So, to stay in shape, Jonathan follows a very strict diet. Dr. Hollins feeds him a weekly special feed with higher calories, he doesn’t eat enough weed.
There’s a picture of Jonathan taken in 1902 and it’s great to compare it to his current photo!
