Immediately after being brought to the shelter in 2011, Higgins, a stray puppy, was adopted. He was brought back to the shelter one year later by someone who found him wandering the streets. Unfortunately for him, what he thought would be a fresh life with a loving family and a forever home turned out to be a life spent tied to the dog house. The executive director of The Humane Society of Preble County, Leslie Renner, felt sorry for him. Higgins was not called or found by anyone, and she got to the conclusion that the previous owners never truly cared. Over the years, Renner frequently received advice to simply put Higgins to sleep, but fortunately, she remained committed to him.

After spending more than 6 years in the shelter, it is difficult for an older dog to find a new home. He wasn’t very friendly with other animals, which is obviously an issue for most people, in addition to being older than the others. One day, a man by the name of Brendon Reed arrived at the shelter to pick up Higgins. At first, Renner struggled to believe it. Higgins was apparently the subject of Reed’s attention on the shelter’s Facebook page, and he had long pondered why no one had taken him in. The Dodo claims that when Reed read about Higgin’s experience, he felt an immediate connection. Reed recently moved into a brand-new home in Xenia, and now that he’s settled in, he decided it was time to hunt for a friend. Higgins was the ideal dog for him.

Higgins had been at the shelter for 2,381 days when he finally started living the beautiful life he so well deserved. Higgins initially felt uneasy around Reed, but now he feels entirely at home, enjoys Reed’s backyard, and enjoys taking naps on the couch, according to Reed in an interview with 2-NEWS.Brendon Reed has always had a soft spot in his heart for people who need another opportunity in life. He works for a group that helps people with felony re-entry, and his family has also given back by volunteering and adopting animals from shelters.

Higgins, a senior dog at The Humane Society of Preble County who had been there for 2,381 days, was just adopted by him. Particularly Higgins, who had previously been adopted as a puppy but had ended up back at the shelter after a year as a stray, their tale attracted a lot of attention online. When Higgins was just a 6-month-old puppy, he initially arrived at The Humane Society of Preble County. He was adopted right away, but it turned out that his new owners didn’t treat him with the respect and love he truly needed.

Higgins failed to find a forever home year after year. His prospects of being adopted may have been limited due to his age, size, or perhaps introverted personality. Or perhaps he was simply awaiting Brendon Reed, his opponent. After reading about Higgins on the shelter’s Facebook page, Reed knew when he finally met him that they were a match made in canine heaven. He had recently bought his own house, so he decided it was the ideal moment to bring Higgins along.
