While the animal kingdom is full of strange friendships, this is by far the strangest wildlife encounter I’ve ever witnessed. A lioness was caught on camera showing affection to what should have been her supper – a wildebeest calf! It was the kind of moment that only happens once in a lifetime!
Tanzania National Parks first shared the video on Twitter, showing a fragile wildebeest baby walking alongside a massive lioness in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The wild feline not only saved the helpless calf, but she also protected it and, even more importantly, she guided it back to its herd. This is extremely unusual behavior, particularly coming from the world’s most fearless predator.
Everyone was perplexed by the lioness’ decision to protect the helpless creatures rather than hunt it down. Her maternal instincts proved to be far stronger than her predatory instincts, which is the only explanation.
The video caption reads, “Wildebeest walking alongside the Lioness at Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. This is what happens when maternal instinct triumphs over predatory instinct!”

This isn’t the first time a lion has shown affection to a wildebeest, as incredible as it may seem. A lioness was filmed a few years ago caring for a newborn wildebeest calf as if it were her own child. The scene, which was part of the wildlife documentary Surviving the Serengeti, went viral on social media and received millions of views.
