The following is a true story about a homeless mama dog who gave birth on the street and fiercely guarded her puppies. Tracey Smith contacted Hope For Paws about a homeless mama dog in a nursery near the interstate who had recently given birth to a litter of puppies. Two HFP volunteers arrived promptly at the nursery to search for the mother, as they needed to make sure she was safe before approaching her puppies.
When they finally found her, they tried to entice her near them with food, but she was too nervous. They realized that catching her with a humane trap was their best option.
They were able to apprehend her as a result of it working. They used food to gain her trust after securing her. They decided to call daughter Haleakala after the Hawaiian volcano Haleakala in Maui. Rescuers hoped that seeing Haleakala’s babies would reassure her that they were there to help because she was still nervous.
The puppies were gathered and placed on a blanket near the mama’s cage. They then returned to ensure that no more puppies had been abandoned. Haleakala and her six puppies were then returned to the rescuers’ clinic, where they were fed and bathed, which they desperately needed.
Haleakala was overjoyed to be safe and warm with her entire family. The rescuers gave the puppies the names Leilani, Molokai, Kalani, Koa, Luana, and Kaiko.
Haleakala used to be terrified of humans, but she has since become extremely sociable and trusting of everyone she meets! And, thankfully, the story comes to a satisfying conclusion. Since then, Haleakala and her puppies have all found loving forever homes!
