A Great Dane Takes In An Orphaned Pawn And Now They Are Inseparable

We’ve seen numerous acts of kindness and unlikely friendships between dogs and animals of various species. When it comes to helping those in need, they’re such selfless creatures. Nonetheless, this story outperforms them all. Meet Kate and Pippin, whose unique bond inspired a children’s book.

Years ago, Isobel Springett, a photographer from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, discovered an orphaned pawn and began an inspiring friendship. The compassionate woman immediately took the helpless creature home to care for her. Isabel introduced the tiny deer to her dog, an adorable great Dane, and the two seemed to be made for each other.

“We saw the tiny fawn wandering around near our house, looking for its mother and crying – it was difficult to ignore,” the woman explained. “We brought it into the house, and our dog Kate was sleeping on her bed, so we placed the fawn beside her for warmth. The two became close over the next few days.”

Life isn’t easy for an orphaned animal. Especially when they have to adjust to a completely new and unfamiliar environment. However, Pippin, as Isabel referred to the adorable little pawn, was surrounded by love and kindness. She also found solace in the gentle Kate, which helped her move on.

They have a one-of-a-kind friendship that comes naturally to them. They enjoy playing together and even napping together when they get the chance! Their bond is stronger than we could ever imagine.

Even later, the adorable couple remained inseparable. “They played for hours in our front garden.” Pip and Kate continued to play together even after Pip matured into a mature doe. “They’re still the best of friends,” Isabel explained.

In fact, Kate and Pippin’s unlikely love story was so unique that it inspired a book. ‘Kate & Pippin: An Unlikely Love Story,’ written by Isabel’s brother Martin Springett, tells their adorable story. “The fawn lay motionless and silent. The opening lines of the book read, “She was alone and afraid as she waited for her mother to come back.”
