A dog’s heart is always gentle when it comes to comforting those in need. Whether it’s other dogs, humans, or animals of various species, the men’s best friend has proven so many times that it can easily be called everyone’s best friend. Sarge, a 9-year-old German Shepherd, couldn’t have been more different.
The kind doggy shows a great compassion for orphaned fawns. Cheryl Stephen, the dog’s owner, is a wonderful person who is always willing to help. As a result, she has adopted many orphaned animals over the years, including some adorable fawns. Sarge was also very friendly with all of the animals her mother had been fostering, but he had never shown as much compassion as he did with Buckwheat.
Buckwheat was Cheryl’s first fawn, and Sarge’s guardian instincts kicked in the moment he met her. “Something clicked in Sarge, and he took to Buckwheat right away,” Cheryl explained to The Dodo. “He wanted to be a part of every aspect of Buckwheat’s care. He accepted the role of Buckwheat’s guardian.”
The sweet dog began to act like a “adoptive mom” to the tiny creature. He trailed her everywhere, just to make sure she didn’t get hurt. “As Buckwheat grew and ventured out on his own a little more, we’d have Sarge go find him and bring him back home,” Cheryl explained.
Buckwheat, who was once helpless, grew into a strong fawn, and Cheryl knew it was time for her to be released into the wild. Sarge was heartbroken, and his mother feared he would never be as gentle with other animals as he was with Buckwheat. But the selfless dog rushed to disprove her.
Sarge immediately shows his intentions as Cheryl brings more orphaned fawns to help them rehabilitate. He’s in a rush to look after these adorable creatures. “When I walk in the door with a fawn, Sarge goes into action,” the woman explained. “He wants to inspect them, and he’ll frantically sniff and nose around to see how they’re doing. The fawns are attracted to Sarge and feel safe in his company.”
