Veteran In Hospice Care Gets Final Wish – To See His Beloved Dog For The Last Time

John Vincent, a 69-year-old Vietnam veteran and Marine, was admitted to the Raymond G. Murphy VA Hospice Center last Thursday. With no family in the vicinity, he was forced to give up Patch, his beloved 6-year-old Yorkshire Terrier mix, as shared by Albuquerque Animal Welfare on Facebook. Vincent told palliative care social worker Amy Neal that he wanted to spend his final moments with Patch. Neal fulfilled his request, and Albuquerque Animal Welfare fulfilled Vincent’s wish by spreading the wonderful news on Facebook.

“Yesterday was a special day for a Veteran named John Vincent and his beloved dog Patch,” the organization said in a statement. “I asked him if that’s something that would be meaningful for him,” Amy Neal told the Albuquerque Journal. And it came together very quickly.” “When the request came in, it was an immediate ‘absolutely,’ and let’s do whatever we can to get it done,” Animal Welfare director Danny Nevarez said. “It was as simple as getting Patch over here.” They’ve spent the whole day together. Patch, John Vincent’s furry buddy, was brought to the hospice by the humane crew at Albuquerque Animal Welfare. Patch was adopted from a neighbor who had a litter of puppies, and he was named after the unusual white patch of fur on his chin, which matched the white patch on the dog’s chest.

“We were the patch brothers,” Vincent explained, referring to himself and his canine buddy. He added that he had a special affection for Patch because he was the tiniest pup in the litter and would frequently take him for motorbike rides. The meeting of the two old friends was a touching occasion, but it was likely to be their final goodbye.
