The Franklin Police Department in Franklin, Massachusetts, was collecting toys for a holiday toy drive, when officers began to realize that some of the toys had gone missing.
To see if anyone had been stealing toys, they decided to check the surveillance footage. Someone had indeed been stealing them, but it wasn’t at all who they expected.
The footage revealed that the department’s Golden Retriever therapy dog, Ben, had been the one who was sneakily taking toys from the bin.
But they had no clue where he was keeping them all. After paying closer attention to him, they caught him taking a baby doll in a carrier and followed him to see where he was bringing it to. It turns out that Ben had been hoarding the toys near his bed under one of the officer’s desks. “When Ben saw the toys, he thought they all belonged to him,” Deputy Chief James Mill told WFXT.
The department caught Ben on video and posted it to their Facebook page. “We learned an extremely valuable lesson today,” they wrote. “When you have a classroom full of toys ready to be shipped off to the Santa Foundation, you should… 1. Close the door to the classroom Or 2. Keep the toys elevated.”
“If not, a golden retriever will slowly hoard them throughout the day and bring them back to his lair. Thanks to Officer Cusson for capturing this larceny on camera.”
Ben, who officers described as a “ray of sunshine,” has since been banned from the toy room.
The police department has even replaced toys that Ben has stolen and slobbered all over.
